I watched a movie a few weeks ago, named The Secret. A young boy was being bullied by kids in school and in his neighborhood. His life at home had been unsettling because he thought his mother and father were not getting along. He felt he could not share his feelings with his mom and dad because he did not want to cause them to worry.
In the meantime, his teacher gave an assignment to the class to write a story about someone they admired. The teacher told them they would be sharing their story at parents’ night.
The boy’s grandfather came for a visit, and he sensed something was wrong with his grandson. The grandfather, in his own quiet way, decided to try and help his grandson. The boy’s birthday was in a few days. This incredibly wise grandfather gave his grandson a present of a glass beaker and told him the Secret. No one knew exactly what he meant by giving him a beaker until the grandson read his story at parents’ night.
The story the boy wrote was this: “People argue with each other so much, hold grudges, and say awful things about each other behind each other’s back. People get bullied. It hurts. You can be so upset and so worried that it will never end. It is like a civil war raging right inside you. My grandfather gave me this beaker, and he told me to imagine that I am a beaker. He told me that what you choose to put inside you is who you are. When you fill your glass with hate and fear, pouring in and worrying about what happened in the past and what could happen in the future, you will probably be miserable. If you fill your beaker with love and caring, miracles can happen. That is what my grandfather taught me. That is the Secret.”
We could all learn from that Secret. We could fill our beaker with love and caring, treating others as we would like to be treated. You might say that you are not able to do that. You are afraid you will fail. Failure is not being knocked down. Failure is in not getting up and trying again.
In Jeremiah 8:4, Jeremiah is told: “Say to them, this is what the Lord says: ‘When people fall, do they not get up? When someone turns away, do they not return?’”
“For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity.” Proverbs 24:16 (NKJV)
“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV)
It is my prayer that we will take this Secret to heart and learn from it. The world would be a better place, and those who try would like themselves for at least trying. And who knows who might be watching and say that they want to be like that. People are watching even when we may not realize it.
I leave this blessing for you from Numbers 6:24-26 (NKJV): “The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.”
